The Value of Sleep January 6

I've never fully understood why people crave this magic thing called sleep before this school year, and more recently this past month.

The only time that I've noticed people REALLY needing every minute of sleep they can get is college students. They are always up doing their last minute papers that were given to them two weeks prior to the due date. I have never been one to procrastinate on things (besides this one history porject; more on that later) and have always found this quite funny as to why they do it. Could it be because of the workload? It seems like a good reason, but most of them are just lazy procrastinators.

The one thing that I did procrastinate on was a history project I just completed this morning (could not be bothered to stay up past 11:30 on the computer). I really needed to finish it since it was worth twenty points of my overall grade, meaning I currently had a 77.2% in the class since it was put in as a zero. I felt really bad about handing it in so late and therefore will never ever do something like that again. You guys can yell at me if I ever do.

I pretty much got five hours of sleep last night since I had to wake up this morning to finish said project. Yeah, that's not going to happen again. :| I ended up falling asleep/laying down on my desk in three classes. I'm pretty sure I was about to drift into sleep in math until no one was answering the questions so I had to. I still got enough notes on the 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles to do the homework, though. I was also half awake in stats today. The sad thing is, what we did today was actually quite important and can really be applied to real world things. We figured out how to find out the probability of certain sections of the normal distribution curve (the famous bell curve).

Not like any of this screwed up sleeping schedule comes as a shocker to me since I was falling asleep past midnight over my Christmas vacation. Normally I don't do this unless I'm working on something on the computer. All I was doing was playing Halo 3 with my brothers until the wee hours of the night! D:

I cannot wait until January 22 when I get a full week off for tests. No one will be home to annoy me. And the best thing: no family things. I can just sit at home and do whatever I want. I will probably get lonely but that's why I have friends. :D

So do you guys get enough sleep or do you suffer from lack-of-sleep disorder like I sometimes do?

Every now and then I will mess up my sleeping schedule. I'll stay up all night and sleep all day. And even though it seems like I'm getting enough sleep each day, I still always felt sick and tired. I guess we're meant to sleep at night and be awake during the day. Nonetheless, I've finally got my schedule back on track and it feels great! Besides, sleeping is one of my favorite things to do.

I don't think it's necessarily out of laziness. I mean... I know I don't do my homework, and that is mostly because I'm lazy, but teachers tend to give HUGE homework dumps all at the same times (before break, around exam time, right when report cards are due), and it can be overwhelming and hard to finish it all.

I don't get enough sleep. I don't stay up late doing work; I just can't sleep. Ever.

On days when I have a huge project due I usually get about 3 hours of sleep :( But I'm unusually awake the next day at school! And then I crash when I get home.

Normally I get about 6 hours, although I try to aim for more.

Hey, not all college students procrastinate their work from 2 weeks ago. :P Seriously, TRY college, and then come back to me. You have projects in EVERY class, and you have to manage your time appropriately. So, something worth 5% that's due the day after 3 projects worth 15% each... yeah, you're going to leave it to the last minute to whip it together. Likewise, with many projects in my area of study, I am up late taking my already quite good project and trying to figure out how to make it excellent.

I miss high school, because I had so much free time. Even with extra curriculars and part time work! Your classes still contain themselves to a neat 8am-3pm block, in most cases. Unlike in post secondary, when classes can run until 6, and more often than not you don't live a quick drive to your school. Then, part time jobs in high school are, more often than not, so you can have spending money. In post secondary, it's to pay for the annoying things adults need to pay for. So, you MUST work, and sometimes you must work late nights. And then go home and finish your project. :P

Hah, I fall into the lazy college student camp! I think I slept more during the daytime during the night this semester ... anyway. I used to get nine hours of sleep every day in high school, but once college started, I'd have problem sets, papers, and midterms almost every week. It was (and still is!) hard to find a good way to manage my time, and it messed with my Circadian rhythms. Nothing like winter break to set a sleep schedule right, though! :P

During the school year, I sleep 6 hours a night on average. After months of that, I am functioning on exhaust fumes. I don't procrastinate on purpose, I just constantly seem to be juggling so many things that before I know it, another deadline is looming up ahead and I haven't even had a crack at it yet. It's mostly extra-curriculars that keep me busy, so I kind of bring it on myself, but I like filling my plate with all these things and I'm not willing to give it up in exchange for more sleep. It's kind of masochistic really.
But this holiday, I have been sleeping almost 10 hours a night, which has been such a welcome, and really recharges me for next semester.

I can never fall asleep before 11. Mostly later. I get an average of about 6 hours of sleep (I get up at 6). Strangely, I'm never tired during the day (that's probably due to 3 cups of tea/day

I don't think college students are lazy, but I do think that procrastination comes from laziness. Or at least in my case, it does.

However, leaving things to the last minute does not always mean procrastination. Sometimes, it means you simply do not have the time to do everything. I had a friend who had two papers due and two finals on one day. Even if he didn't procrastinate, he still had to leave something to the last minute and pull an all-nighter. The papers also had to be college quality, so that takes a bit more time. But at the end of the day, when you're given a horrible schedule like that, BSing starts occurring everywhere.

Hey - sorry it probably totally seems like I'm stalking you now - but yesh I am one of those lack-of-sleepers....and it's all my own fault too...okay and my crazy schedule, but mostly my fault. Btw - since you seem to be into making pastries (you don't plan on owning a bakery when you're older do you?) I was wondering - have you ever made baklava? Idk if I spelled that right, 'twould be yummy though. Okay now that I'm done being a creeper who randomly decided to read your blog, I'll go back to my lovely homework...:P
